−−−The Bathurst project is not only inherently safer than the Pike River mine because it involves no tunnelling, but it is also targeting four times more production a year than the 1 million tonnes Pike River had hoped to achieve.
By 2015, Bathurst aims to be exporting up to 4 million tonnes a year of high-grade coking coal from the same Brunner seam as the Pike River mine was tapping beneath protected conservation land.
Bathurst listed on the NZX on November 26, a week after the first explosion at Pike River. It has kept a low profile since as the tragedy has played out, although its share price has risen from 74 cents at listing to 92 cents yesterday.
The Buller project will need a starting workforce of 165 people, rising to 250 within a year, said Mr Bohannan. Access arrangements and resource consents are the remaining hurdles. （以下略）
